YA5WKEPACLB*: What Gen Con 2008 meant for me

August 18, 2008 by The Chatty DM

It was the Monster Mash!

It was the Monster Mash!

Yax, this one is for you!

Feeling: I entered Gen Con 2008 feeling like a Nobody, I left it feeling like a Rockstar

Lesson learned: Edition Wars hate mongers are idiots. Rules are lies, Game systems are guidelines at best. Bask in the awesomeness of your bile and leave us alone while we have fun.

77 words.

*Yet Another 5000 word epic post about the contents of my laundry basket.

“Rules are lies”……. lol! Yep, how true.

And of course, there are good lies, and bad lies. There’s a blogpost for you just waiting to happen 😀

@Daniel: Hi there! The long answer would be telephone-book long.

    Short answers?

1)I played D&D with James Wyatt and he managed to avoid TPKing ‘the Press’ by caging us and letting us Skill Challenge our way out of a tight pickle…

    2) All WotC I met employees saying ‘So you’re the Chatty DM’

    3) Meeting Readers face to face and getting hugged by them.

    4) Drunken D&D

    5) Having an industry person sit on your game without telling you. Then get an email by him saying that he’d pay Rock concert prices for another game with a DM like me.

    6) Having a super nice comment by a new commenter and then realizing a few hours later that she’s the daughter of the founder of our hobby.

    So yeah, Rockstar.

People, you should blog. You might not pull it off, but look what it can achieve!

@Greywulf: Don’t tempt me! =) Thanks for the great art!

@Chatty: I can sure see why you feel like a rock star then! I can only hope my meager contributions can pay off similarly. Yeah…I didn’t start blogging for the money…it was the fame and chicks that got me 😉

Definitely loved the GM-Fu. I have to say that I think it was the best that I attended. And contained the best quote, “F*ck the rules!” There’s a lot of people that go to the seminars looking on ways to be a better DM, and ultimately, I think that teaching people to not let the rules get in the way of fun has to be the best.

  13. ChattyDM says

    August 19, 2008 at 12:20 am

@Tomcat: Word of advice Tom (and all my blogging friends out there), and I say it with respect and love for you guys

    STOP SAYING THAT YOU SUCK!

I know you are telling yourselves that it’s your sense of humour, or that you are just joking around…

But that’s a lie. It’s the Inner Demons talking 🙂

I stopped saying that I sucked at a certain point and I started believing that I could be more than what I currently am. I must say it worked out fine.

(That doesn’t mean that I stopped having doubts… I just stopped sharing that I had them)

@Ravyn: That’s the spirit, although you have quite a thing going at Today… does that bring in actual benefits all these ‘today of the week’ and such?

@Bart: You, I will cherish the day that I behead your character with a Wooden Spoon… 🙂 Being Broken is actually fun, if a bit exhausting… The fact that I was swearing in Frech at the table, trying to recover my senses was just too funny.

@Gamefiend: Got your email. Will respond soon! Thanks!

@Ambush: When we were done, DNAPhil said ‘Well, you sure woke them up with that!” I’m actually proud that I was tired enough not to care about propriety and actually talk to you guys (and gals) with my raw instincts.

Look for more next year… maybe an advance trope class or something.

  14. Ambush says

    August 19, 2008 at 1:25 am

F*ck propriety. People in this country are FAR too easily offended anyways. Warn ’em at the beginning if they are lucky. 🙂

  15. Tom says

    August 19, 2008 at 4:46 am

@Chatty: I’m not saying I suck, just that I’m inexperienced as a blogger. A bit different…and since my blog’s only been up a month, it’s true too. Things are starting to go well though, so I guess I’m getting the hang of it. Next thing you know, I’ll be a rock star at Dragoncon or something 😀

Toms last blog post..Alignment Part 2 – The Heart of Darkness

  16. ChattyDM says

    August 19, 2008 at 5:44 am

@Tom: I jumped on your comment and made it more general. I’m sorry you were made to look like I was pointing you out. There is nothing I would like better than to step into the ICC hall next year with a squadron of Rockstar Bloggers.

In fact, I want you guys to seriously start thinking about submitting your blogs for an Ennies next year. While only one can win, submitting it forces one to go above and beyond to get good enough to at least get the nod from the judges.

I didn’t even make it to the nominations and look how well I was treated by all.

I don’t fear competition, if another blogger comes out of our pack and blows us all away with her brilliance, niceness and leadership, I want to ride HER coattail to the next solar system… and I’ll bring Cappuccinos

  17. Ambush says

    August 19, 2008 at 8:39 am

I won’t argue with the Brilliance and/or Leadership….but I have to say…most of the female DM’s that I’ve run into have absolutely -reveled- in their ability to rip out your spleen while smiling sweetly. I’m not saying that I haven’t enjoyed it, I’m just saying…..

    😉

  18. ChattyDM says

    August 19, 2008 at 9:45 am

    Lol!

I said She but it was a placeholder pronoun for anyone really.

  19. Tom says

    August 19, 2008 at 1:45 pm

@Chatty: It’s cool. I’ll definitely consider submitting my humble blog for an Ennie next year. Sure, I may not make it, but who cares? I do this for fun.

Oh yeah, and for fame and the women! 😉
