I’m swamped! Obligatory Link cop-out!

June 10, 2008 by The Chatty DM

I can’t seem to find time to read the Core books and I’d like to take a stab at reviewing them soon.

I have to write my monthly column for Roleplayingtips.com. Plus I have to do the draw for the Story/characterization contest.

I also have to do some maintenance on the blog, add a few people on my blogroll/minions list, put up a new banner for my Sponsor, get rid of Google ads (what was I thinking?) and start planning my Gen Con trip and the seminar I’ll be doing with DNAPhil and friends.

Yeah, I’m a bit swamped here.

So I’ll be taking a few days off from regular blogging to catch up on all that stuff.

In the meantime I have a few tidbits for you.

Of D&D, Storytelling and Legos

First while backtracking on all the links to this site, I’ve discovered a very recent blog called ‘At-Will’ that linked to one of the very best play reports I have ever seen.

It’s about a Story-telling GM playing Keep on the Shadowfell with his 7 year old son.

The number of humbling lessons that a 7 year old can give about D&D in this series of post is just too awesome. Forget Meepo and meet Slllkot and Blag, the 2 best kobolds NPCs ever created.

Oh and also the whole adventure is done with Legos… including a model of Winterhaven created by a 7 year old World Builder.

I’m so playing KoS with my son this summer!

You have the core books? How about some free Forgotten Realms

In his quest to conquer the Internets by having you all subscribe to his Feed by both email and reader, Yax has put up a contest. This time you get a chance to win the 3 future Forgotten Realms hardcovers (or the 3 Core Books if you don’t have them yet). All you have to do is subscribe to Dungeonmastering.com email feed.

Oh and did you see his new layout? Awesome man!

The Nice Troll

One of my new favorite blogging stops is Brian’s Trollsmyth. While Brian prefers all things Old School, he takes the time to pick and choose D&D themed articles (from all editions) from the Blogsphere and comment on them. He’s been very nice to often link to my stuff, so now it’s time for me to return the favor.

Have a look at his hacks of the Magic-User spells for the D&D Red Box( Moldvay/Cook)/Labyrinth Lord games. There’s a lot of work there and it seems like a very interesting addition to the somewhat limited prowess of old School magic users.

Back to the grind

All right, that’s it for me… I’m going to catch up and come back with more chattiness soon.

Also – just read that father and son moment. Awe, that was the cutest thing ever. I need a 7 year old because apparently once they hit like 10 you can forget sweet moments like that. Mine wants to dominate EVERYTHING right away and the whole time. If he can’t do that, he gets mad, hates me, and goes to find a video game to play.

I really wanted to go to GenCon Indy this year, but it very quickly slipped out of my budget range. I had $3000 in car repairs, and was soon after informed that I needed to find a new place to live because they’re selling the house that my apartment is a part of… ::sigh:: I also wanted to go to meet some of the people I’ve heard about (Wolgang Baur seems really cool, and I wanted to sponsor his project just to play his table at GenCon), and also some of the people I’ve communicated with (like Mr. ChattyDM). Plus, it just seems like a really good time. Maybe next year.

@Chatty: You should definitely take a break. You seem like you have a lot on your plate, and you should keep from burning yourself out. Besides, I’m pretty sure the last time you said you were going to take a break, you started posting more 😛 (Just teasin’, take a break, man)

Enjoy your couple of “days off”, Chatty. It must take a lot of energy to come up with the amount of awesomeness you provide us with every week.

And thanks for the links – couple of gems in there.

@Felonius: What kills me is that from the moment I press send on such posts, uncontrollable inspiration strikes and my energy returns with a vengeance. I’m perfectly aware that I never post like I do when I say I’ll stop posting.

At least I’m making headway with my Story contest results. I’m building the PDF and will edit the entires tomorrow.

I’ve been using Legos instead of minis since I started playing D&D again in 2000. It’s great and the best part is the start of the campaign where players not only get to make their character, but to build their lego guy. If you have a large collection of legos I highly recommend this approach for minis.

Good luck at Gencon and hoping tat u wuld post some pics here on the blog so I could drool over them.

Read about the 7yr old game earlier, it would be such a wonderful feeling to get your kid scared of a MONSTER TOWN….YOU NEVER KNOW…..

Any conference papers tat we r expecting to see ?

If you don’t mind a bit of shameless self-promotion, here’s an encounter generator I wrote for 4th edition with all the monsters in the Monster Manual (nearly 500), plus the ones that have been posted in Dungeon and Dragon articles so far.

I did prune out the “unique” monsters, like Orcus and Yeenoghu.

    Thanks for the link-love, Chatty.

When I started my blog, I thought I could cover all rpg blogging out there. After all, how much good stuff could there really be?

Yeah, right. That didn’t last long, and now it’s mostly D&D and d20, and I’m hardly scratching the surface on that. But I try to be as agnostic about it as possible.

Take care of yourself, have a great time, and I’ll be looking forward to having you back up at full speed.

@Captain Cursor: I am alway s impressed at how much ‘in scale’ legos are and how varied the choices are. I mean they got the look near perfectly!

They are great geeky alternative to minis.

@QM: The seminar I’ll participate in will hand out a nice hefty booklet full of GMing wisdom and exercises. I don’t know what DNAPhil will do with the file after the seminar. I’ll discuss this with him.

@Asmor: I see that your generator was already picked by Brian. I love cross-pollination like that!

Tell you what Asmor, if it’s cool and we gain to know about it I’m all for plugs!

Speaking of plugs, have you guys noticed the spiffy new Banner that the Ze Stuff guys made for me? 🙂

@Brian: Anytime Brian! Your endeavor needs to be known. I love your digest format!
