POWERS: Psychotic

March 8, 2006 by spankleberry

Powers Graphic Novel # 9: Collecting Volume 2 Issues 7-12

What can I say about Powers? It’s one of the best written comics I know of, or at least one of my favorites, and certainly the only currently ongoing comic I actively seek out.

Powers contains gritty noir detective stories centered around Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, two homicide cops in the department that deals specifically with super-powered crime. If you haven’t read Powers before, this latest book isn’t a bad place to start, but of course I’d recommend going back to the beginning and starting with #1 Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl. Honestly, it was that book specifically that got me back into comics (along with The Red Star.) Powers: Psychotic is a fairly well self-contained story arc dealing with one particular super-power-giving item and the real ways in which people that interact with power for good or for ill, and the all-too-human side of a police department’s internal affairs. It’s one of the best detective tales yet, with Michael Avon Oeming’s hard-hitting simple art and Brian Michael Bendis’ gripping tales.

I agree wholeheartedly. Powers is awesome, and if you’ve only read Bendis’s Marvel work, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not checking out Powers. (Go back and read the trades though. The current story arc is pretty difficult to get into.)

They recently put out a Hardcover encompassing the first year of Powers stories (not sure how many trades that is, 3?) but it’s at a good price for a Hardcover, so that’s what I plan on picking up.
