Inq. of the Week: Why So Serious?

This Friday is the day many of us have been waiting for since we saw the last 10 minutes of Batman Begins, back in 2005. At that point it had been exactly 10 years since any real effort was put towards bringing the caped crusader to the big screen, and even those results were questionable. This Friday we’ll all get to see how the latest Batman series of movies attempts to break through the sequel malaise that has claimed many other superhero franchises until X-men came along.

Last week Dave was hot off the heels of his coverage at Origins and was curious about the popularity of Podcasting and how frequently all of you listen to them. The poll was one of our closest in a while, with the slight majority of you (30%) saying you never listen to podcasts at all, with 25% of you saying you rarely listen to them (myself included), but close behind was 24% who listen to them regularly. The smallest group was still 20% of the votes that listens to podcasts occasionally. The way I qualify the poll is grouping them into a positive category and a negative, resulting in 44% who like podcasts and 55% that don’t caring about them with a 1% remainder.

This week we’re asking you about Batman, because it just makes sense. We’re also very curious to know in the comments when you’re planning on seeing The Dark Knight, so stop by and let us know if you’re seeing it at a midnight showing, opening night, opening weekend, waiting a few weeks, or not bothering to see it in theaters at all.

I was really torn between the original Batman and the updated Begins, Simply because A) Its the that started it all, though it became an abomination. B) Jack Nicholson is Fecking CLassic as Joker.
C) It wasnt a bad movie

but all in all I think they really got Batman down pat in Begins.

Cant wait for Dark Knight

I get to see it before all of you…for I am a projectionist, and have thus been tasked with personally screening the movie to check for any problems with the print before the midnight showing on Thursday…

I assume that myself and the Mr. will be seeing it either at midnight or at one of them spiffy 10 pm “because you’re not a teenager anymore, nerd” showings. I’m not dying of excitement yet, but I imagine I will be shortly.

Growing up without comics, animated series were my only big insight into super heroes, and between Batman, X-men, Spiderman, and Iron man, I had a lot of happy Saturday mornings.
Frankly, I find it too much coincidence that these are the franchises that have done so well in the theaters. Am I missing a saturday morning cartoon that we’ll soon see reimagined to fit into two-hour, CG-filled morsels?

In a related note:

Dc has more IMAX screens than any other metropolitan area in the world. So why do I have to go to Harrisburg just to see this film on IMAX? (actually I’ll see it in Charlotte, NC, but whatever.)

I’ll be seeing it at the midnight showing this Thursday. I’ve got a rehearsal and then me and some of the fellas will be heading off for food and then to the show. I don’t get to see many midnight movies, but I think Batman (1989) was the first one I ever saw, so I’m looking forward to more all-night Joker action!

This was a Batman: The Animated Series movie made for TV (or direct to video) and I find it to be excellent. Since it wasn’t an available choice, I voted for Mask of the Phantasm, which I also like quite a bit.

I’ll be seeing Dark Knight with the Princess around the beginning of August when it reaches Discount Tuesday because it is then $3.50 a ticket with far fewer anklebiters.

I liked all the Animated Series movies… Mystery of the Batwoman was probably the weakest (coming far after the show was already done) but it was still pretty good.

Return of the Joker wins out among all though. Completely tragic.
