4e D&D SRD is up

The long-awaited SRD is up, and it doesn’t contain a lot of surprises, but it’s somewhat disappointing (especially by those of us spoiled by the openness of the 3e SRD.) Probably the only improvement for 3rd party product makers and fans is that they can finally put something with the D&D logo on the packaging, instead of dancing around it with a different logo.

More analysis than I can provide is going on over at ENWorld. I’ll try to take a closer look at it to see if I can get anything out of it, but I’m sure many of us in the blog community are more holding our breath for the fan-site policy (which, in the absence of any real information, is developing some ominous associations with TSR’s old policies of trying to remove any mention of D&D from the web…)

If such is the case I will ignore it until I get a cease and desist. I’m 99% convinced that the won’t be able to police the web and will go for a ‘do no harm’ policy.

Oh, I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as it looks. But the mere fact that they’re going to have one (and are being secretive about it) is enough to put the association in a lot of people’s heads… in fact, in the heads of players that can be their biggest allies.
