Inq. of the Week: Which Edition?

Just over a week ago Dave wrapped up his 18 Adventure long, and final, D&D 3.5 Campaign with a definitively epic finale.  This inspired him to ask you all how many campaigns you’ve been in that have seen completion, to which a huge 30% of you voted that you’ve never had a campaign finish, or been involved in only one ongoing campaign.  2-3 finished campaigns was the next highest option with 25%, followed by only one campaign at 12%, and a whopping 10+ campaigns finished came in next with 11%.  Those seem like pretty good numbers, though there are 5 people who voted for not playing RPG’s or not playing in campaigns, for those people we’d love to hear from you because a vocal minority is always interesting to hear from!

Last Friday D&D was pretty much unavoidable, as the controversial and awaited 4th Edition core books launched with what seemed like a thundrous fury, we’re all extremely happy that the launch successfully sustained through leaked PDF’s and early shipments to still raise quite a bit of excitement.  Dave expressed that he is a bit weary of talking about the flaws with certain games, and so I’m going to posit a question of positivity!

Which of these gaming quotes is the funniest?

  • Player: "What did you say about foreplay and fornication?"
DM: "I said it was FULL PLATE of FORTIFICATION." (44%, 61 Votes)
  • Village Chieftan: "Welcome! We have awaited your arrival! Our oracle told us of your coming long ago…"
Player: [interrupting] "We don't DO side quests." (41%, 57 Votes)
  • "Critical strike… oh fuck it is wearing pants." (15%, 21 Votes)

Total Voters: 139

I voted AD&D in the poll, however I think 3/3.5 was probably a much better rules set. Just my findest memories of playing the game were with that set, you just can’t ever recapture the fun my friends and I had when we moved to AD&D from the basic stuff.

4th Ed does look to have made things streamlined from my rough skimming of the books I just received today. Hoping I can rope some friends into playing soon.

4e all the way. Ever since the first roll of the dice this weekend, kicking off 32 hours of gaming, I was hooked.

I am still finishing the current campaign in 3.5, however.

Still 3.5 for me…so many good memories…4e needs to come into it’s own for me…

I voted 4E, but its so hard to say considering I’ve played in one adventure!

I had plenty of good times with 2E D&D and 3E D&D (2E probably winning out with raw fun times, though that had a lot to do with my age and situation.) But after playing 4e, I can’t see myself going back and playing in campaigns from the previous editions. If 4e doesn’t work out for whatever reason, I’ll play some non-D&D RPG.

I’m slightly amazed that anyone has voted for 3.0 instead of 3.5 or 3.x, I assume it’s a money issue and not wanting to buy the new books but the revisions solved SO many problems with 3e.

Classic D&D holds a special place in my heart, and always will. 3.5e comes mighty close, for all it’s flaws and foibles. Maybe 4e will unseat it - only time will tell.

The c. 1981 Basic/Expert D&D has become my favorite. Just the right balance for my current tastes, and it’s easy to borrow things I like from all the other editions for it.

Can’t vote for 4e since I haven’t played it yet. But that will change this weekend.

I voted AD&D but my son (whom I taught to play) has played every addition from AD&D to 4th and tells me I will like the 4th edition. We will see.
