Dragon, Dungeon Magazines to Cease Publication

Just over the wire from GamingReport: Dragon Magazine and Dungeon Magazine, the 30+ year old magazines of D&D, roleplaying, and much more, is ceasing publication.

In 2002, the rights to both magazines was handed off to Paizo Publishing, which mainly consisted of writers and editors who were doing the magazines anyway. However, it sounds from the press release that both Wizards and Paizo decided to finally pull the plug once and for all. Both companies have some kind of replacement lined up: Wizards plans to produce the same kind of content online, and Paizo took the opportunity to announce a monthly-released campaign.

A full FAQ is available on Paizo’s site to explain the changes. This is sad in a number of ways, and possibly another sign that the magazine format may be going away in favor of online content. This is unfortunate from a writer’s point of view as it means that there will be less paid work to provide content, but possibly good for the community that has more free access to content.

Anyway, as a longtime Dragon (and occasional Dungeon) reader who found value in both publications, it is something of a sad day.
