Last week’s Inquisition asked what your favorite Gaming-related tv show/episode or movie was, and it looks like the majority voted for the excellent episode of Dexter’s Laboratory titled D&DD. Good choice!
This week we are asking perhaps the most important question ever asked in the history of the universe:

This is probably the greatest showdown of all time. On one side you have the greatest Wizard ever to exist, greater then both man and elf, he has lived 300 lifetimes of man and rides upon the lord of all horses, Shadowfax! On the other, you have one of the most powerful and notorious mutants in the world, who’s powers seem limitless in their control of magnetism and manipulating metals. The great equalizer is that they are both portrayed on screen by the one and only Sir Ian McKellen.
So this I pose to you, readers, who would win in a fight? Feel free to elaborate on the finer details of the combat in the comments to this post!

Gandalf the Grey tied a Balrog in a fight. Magneto could not beat a Balrog. Gandalf the White is more powerful than Gandalf the Grey. Therefore, Gandalf the White could defeat Magneto.

Yea, but Gandalf the Grey used Glamdring on the Balrog, which is thusly quite useless against one: Magneto. So that argument doesn’t really hold up unless you’re arguing the outcome as sheer display of ability/power rather then specifics.

Good point.
But I don’t think Glamdrig was the key to victory, it was just easy and was at-hand.
Gandalf is an immortal quasi-god anyway.

Magneto may have died a few times, but he certainly always finds a way to come back. (bad comic writers ftw!)

Come on now…
Gandalf: “I’ll talk to animals and maybe throw you around, assuming I have my staff!”
Magneto: “Lesse, I can throw a million swords at you, rip the iron from your blood, suffocate you by surrounding your entire body with metal…”

Furthermore, I don’t see any reason Magneto couldn’t beat a Balrog, especially in a Dwarven mine where he has plenty to work with.

uber wizzardd > neatoe muttant
intelligent comment ftw!

Magneto is a one hit wonder…he can rip the iron from your bloodstream and then pierce you causing newly anemic flesh wounds to develop, but unless he has ample resources to work with, not much he can do…
Gandalf the White, however, is adaptable to any situation…and using his incredible force of will and masterful control over everything arcane, he can prevail in any situation…plus, he’s apparently got Pelor on his side (what with having been truly resurrected from greydom to fulfill “his purpose”)…and in my opinion, I think Pelor would back Whitey at least long enough to whip Magneto’s metal manipulating maximus…

I posted this because I see it as being very close, I’m actually surprised there are so many for Gandalf right now, but I won’t be surprised if it ends up being much closer.
I voted Gandalf because, from reading the books, I got a very strong sense of Gandalf not even getting close to doing all he is capable of. It seemed very much like he would always do ‘exactly as much was necessary’, never showing off or using too much power. Plus I never really got how he just kind of knows what’s going to happen and what he needs to do.
The fun of it is thinking how powerful Magneto would be even in Middle-Earth, he might very likely be able to overpower Gandalf with sheer metal mass, but that’s up to you guys to decide! Remember that Magneto never really ripped iron from someone’s body unless they were injected with extra iron, and this fight doesn’t involve a hot Mystique to do that for him. Plus there’s really a rationale for Magneto using metal to protect himself from any of Gandalf’s magics.
I still think Gandy comes through the victor, but I think it’s much closer then the results show right now!

The battle may come down to the location, though…
Of course, Magneto, being the manipulative super villian he is, may lure Gandalf into a place filled with objects for him to work with…but if Gandalf comes prepared with a decent few spells, he’ll last plenty long enough to turn “metals to petals” (a spell from the wizards forum entitled “1001 Silly Spells), rendering Magneto’s plot much less effective…
Either way, a limited psionicist against a humble loremaster (with deific back-up) is an easy pick…
Posted: Feb 26th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
You can hardly label Magneto a “limited psionicist”, the man CONTROLS MAGNETISM for the love of god.
Posted: Feb 26th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Alright, alright…he’s a specialist psionicist, then…sure, he has an unlimited number of power points, but they only work on one medium…

I had no idea Magneto could do that with blood.
I still voted for Gandalf (before reading comments), but I think it’s quite close. It would depend on the situation and who managed to act quicker.

This battle is NOT close. Gandalf is one of the five Istari (read: powerful god immortals) sent over to Middle Earth from the Undying Lands to oppose Sauron. But, though they were to oppose Sauron for as long as necessary, they were Forbidden to reveal their ‘true power’ or to use force against Sauron. Instead, they were to influence the free peoples (men, elves, dwarves, hobbits, ents, eagles, etc) and persuade them to attack Sauron.
The display of power that Gandalf showed in the battle with the Balrog is but a fraction of his true power. There is really no way that Magneto could defeat, or even harm, the fully unveiled Gandalf even if they were locked in a room full of millions of metal objects.
Magneto is a very powerful man. Gandalf is basically an unkillable, immortal, god/angel. Advantage: Gandalf.

Unless Magneto worked for Gondor against Sauron; then Gandalf would just have to run away or get pwned?
Posted: Feb 27th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Magneto’s broken 25% and climbing!

NOW I did vote Gandolf, but that’s only in the long run. I think in just a first off the immdiate abilities of the mutatnt would take precidence, but that’s only a minor setback for a demigod.

couldn’t gandalf just immediately think of a spell to turn magneto to stone, or stop his heart, or teleport his head into outer space or whatever?
on the other hand i don’t think we’ve defined any rules. magneto is a scientist also… what’s to stop him from flying over middle earth and just nuking gandalf?

gator: I don’t remember Gandalf ever displaying the abilities to do any of those things?
