The failure of the UMD format, and their continued battle against letting people do what they want with their PSP, is hurting sales, and driving people over to the DS. Simply put, Nintendo invented the handheld, and knows it best. That said, it's always a good idea to add good titles. Even if the system doesn't succeed, Sony wants PSP owners to not feel totally burned by their purchase so that they are customers for future systems (like I was by the Sega 32X!)
