A New Take on the Afterlife
Many theories about what happens to you when you die have reared themselves throughout the ages, but none take the approach that Gantz does. Gantz, produced by ADV films, takes a teenager Kei, and throws him into a paranormal afterlife filled with aliens, heavy weapons, and of course anime chicks.
The main character Kei, meets up with a childhood friend by coincidence at a Subway station. An elderly person decides to end his life and jumps into the tracks. The two young men decide to save him and end up getting killed instead. They wake up in a room with several other people and a large Black Sphere. This Sphere is Gantz. Gantz likes to play games with people, sending them on missions to rid the world of Aliens to accumulate points. When you reach 100 points you get set free.
The thing is, everyone in the room is dead. Well that’s what they all believe anyway. They have no way to leave the room, and the only choice is to fight the Aliens. Gantz provides them with suits and weapons for survival. The repercussions of not using these is evident early on in the series. As Kei does more missions he becomes more engrossed into the “Game” that Gantz likes to play.
This is a fresh take on what the Afterlife might be like. Who’s to say we all don’t go off to fight aliens when we die. It’s definitely a must see.

I have not seen the series, though upon your recommendation I will certainly see it at some point. It seems that this is more a story about purgatory, and simply a place that exists on the way to the afterlife, as you can accumulate points to eventually leave.
When was this anime created and how did you find out about it? Also, do you watch it on tv or is it simply a rental/download deal that you’ve seen it?
It is currently being released on DVD. A random purchase I made. I don’t think purgatory is right in that all the people who get sent didn’t die. So maybe afterlife overall isn’t right either. It’s from 2004. I have the first 8 DVD’s, it’s still being released.
The Japanese government took offense because it’s a pretty scathing review of Japanese culture and “an afterlife they deserve.”
It’s Netflixable, and ::cough:: obtainable other ways. I dislike how they’re packing it with only two episodes per disk for the same price as other series that contain four episodes.
Who wouldn’t want to “deserve” an afterlife of playing games/killing aliens?! Any japanese person can tell you that it’s what they -really- want in life, they’re just too shy to admit there’s a little Boba Fett in everyone.
OMG TBF!!!
(OMG the Boba Fett!)
Actually not all of them have 2 episodes, some have 3 and 4.
